A rare and fine quality Scottish Mauchline ware sycamore
snuff box with a hand-painted penwork hunting scene on the front of
huntsmen and dog with game, circa 1825.

The back has hand-painted wriggle lines that can send you cross-eyed if you look at them for long enough! This decoration is typical on such boxes. |

The sides are similarly decorated. |

The interior retains some of its metal lining. Note the
use of the Scottish concealed hinge.
The hinge has split and been successfully repaired. |

The maker's name survives on the inside bottom of the box - "Crawford of Cumnock." The Crawfords were among the first and most important makers of such boxes in the town of Cumnock in Ayrshire, SW Scotland. |
